THE INHERITED EARTH RESIDENCY

I work in the interdiv of performance, live installation, and sculpture. Utilising influences and experiences from the performing arts, I explore movement and behaviour related to the history and memory of my ancestors and their impact on our current social-political landscape.

My works depict the overlaps of tradition, mythology, and lifestyle, addressing how they are intertwined with the mediation and production of identity through new technologies and circulations of forms. Thus, my practice acts as a space for reflection on processes of transition, hybridisation and transformation, pushing these questions into material investigations of the 'third culture kid' and other intercultural or/and interpersonal issues. Embodying the entanglement of 'everyday life' and heritage, I challenge the physical boundaries of sculpture through sound, smell, vibrations, heat and movement, emphasising the presence of history that may no longer have a physical body but still moves around and in us, defining our social constructions of today.

Franek Wardyński (b. 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based between London, Warsaw, and Stockholm. Wardyński's main focus is on ways of narrating through critical art explorations, field projects, and research adventures. He explores concepts such as the cannibalisation of culture, land art, and matters of translation, through a diverse range of media including printmaking, sculpture, and performance. Specialising in visual experiences and new perspectives, his work incorporates multimedia creations and installations for museums, theatres, and operas.

Educated at the London College of Communication, Central Saint Martins, the Royal College of Art, and the College of Architecture at Texas Tech University, Wardyński founded his studio in 2015. During the past years, Wardyński has engaged in multiple art residencies and field projects, such as the Alps Art Academy for Land and Environmental Art in Switzerland and the Land Arts of the American West programme in 2019, as well as the Land Arts Adaptation programme in 2020, in Texas, USA.

Lily Clark is an artist living between the Eastern Sierra and Los Angeles, California. After receiving her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2015, she began her ceramic studio practice and built a cross-disciplinary process by using digital manufacturing methods like 3D printing to create custom tools for extruding and shaping clay. Her work straddles both art and design, and although she works with materials including stone, resin, wood, and metal, she considers water to be her primary medium. Her work has been featured by publications including Architectural Digest, Sight Unseen, and New York Magazine. In 2022, she exhibited new work with Stroll Garden Gallery, Some Clouds, and at Design Miami. This summer, she participated in a six week residency at Shiro Oni in Onishi, Japan, forging close connections with local stonemasons while sculpting three new water features using the local Sanbaseki stone.

Marie Hervé and Elsa Martinez have been working as a duo since 2020. Drawing a trajectory on the lands of the Mediterranean area, their project focuses on Western history and its myths as a fictional, fantasized construction, a place of collective projections or political and social marginalization. Exploring the notions of ruins, reconstruction and memory, they develop a photographic and plastic research between image and writing, archaeology and architecture. They participated in Nuovo Grand Tour residency in Puglia (Italy) with the support of Institut Français Italia and were awarded the Eurazeo research grant in 2021. The project was exhibited at the Librairie du Palais Gallery (Arles, FR), at the Hôtel de l'Industrie (Paris, FR), at FRAC Paca (Marseille, FR) and Salon Approche (Paris, FR), among others.

Maria Varela is an interdisciplinary artist focusing on creative applications of new technologies, textile data visualization and collaborative production with women communities. She experiments with ways in which the archival event is transcribed from the digital environment to the physical world. She creates digital and physical artifacts and events, exploring concepts such as identity, memory, tradition and their constructions. She has presented her work in numerous exhibitions internationally, in museums such as TMoFA (Taiwan), Bozar (Belgium), EMST, MOMus and the Museum of the History of Greek Costume (Greece) as well as in group exhibitions such as Festival de Arte_Videobrasill (Sao Paulo), Media Art Biennale (Wroclaw), Siggraph (Vancouver), Transmediale (Berlin), ISWC (Seattle), Piksel (Bergen), Tetramatyka (Lviv), Visual Dialogues - Onassis Foundation (Athens) etc. In 2021 he was awarded the Selected Art Award by the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. She completed her postgraduate studies at MA Interactive Media (2010), Goldsmiths College University and PG Fine Arts (2007) Central Saint Martins, London and her undergraduate studies at the Department of Fine Arts (2005), University of Ioannina, Greece.

Maro Avrabou, visual artist and light designer works in both the field of visual arts and those of theater, dance, and opera. Dimitri Xenakis, visual artist, is working in and with the landscape, constantly renewing his artistic language to interact with the environment. They live in France and work in Europe, Asia, and South America. The two collaborate on works co-signed that question living spaces, points of view, forms and light. They work on all kind of projects dealing with urban and natural landscape. Their projects deal with the landscape, the built and the light. Their installations, often monumental in size, are a dialogue with the sites, their morphology, their history, their identity. The social and environmental aspect and the human dimension are important elements of this approach: the consideration of the specificity of a site and the look that one can wear on it. Based on this, Maro Avrabou and Dimitri Xenakis work to create the link between the existing and the artistic intervention.

Miriam Isasi has a PhD in Fine Arts from the EHU/UPV and the UNAM in Mexico. He has received residency programs at the Spanish Academy in Rome (Italy), Artist x Artist (Cuba), BilbaoArte Foundation, Kunsthaus in Bregenz (Austria), EAS-EZE Bitamine Faktoria (Irún-Buenos Aires), MA Studio in Beijing, Nekatoenea in Hendaye (France), Center d'Art i Natura in Farrera (Spain) and at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

From a contemporary position, it generates a discourse that is built from winks to anthropology, history, activism, alchemy, landscape and memory. He has had different exhibitions at ARTIUM, the Spanish Academy in Rome, the San Fernando Academy, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Rekalde Hall, MUSAC, HUARTE, CAB, the BilbaoArte Foundation, Azkuna Zentroa Alhóndiga in Bilbao, the San Telmo Museum, Tabakalera, Montehermoso or La Panera Art Center in Lleida among others. He is currently working with Talka Galería in the production and visualization of some of his latest projects.

Mathias Vincent-Palazzi (1994) is a researcher and spatial designer. After graduating from Sandberg Instituut, he co-founded the research and creation studio Niveau Zéro Atelier in his hometown Paris.

Thanks to the tools of architecture, art and design, the studio develop works focused on the practices that inhabits specific territories. Looking at how these intertwine social, ecological, technological, and economical urgencies, the studio make objects, propose narratives, suggest solutions, often embracing technic as a vector for reappropriation of the world.

Derived from site-specific analyses, arises a multi-scale practice, ranging from experimental to purely functional, which can involve both speculation and/or simple construction.

Yorgia Karidi, is an Athenian visual artist, musician, dj and performer, whose works / ‘live sets’ focus on listening, vocal qualities and inter-media, cross-genre compositions. She works with painting, sculpture, video, performance, sound and verbal scores. She has worked extensively with the human voice in performance with the desire to understand the historical, political and cultural context of the existence of a femininity in the world. Bonding with the community she belongs in, collaborating with artists and musicians and the poetry in simple acts and gestures is the axis of her work. Her latest practice/research, uses the symbol phrase Free Things and is devoted to empowering creativity and the rare liberating elements in today’s life. Published work among others on labels: Nutty Wombat, Inner Ear Records, Orila Records, Ecstatic, Bokeh Versions.

Zoe is an architect, currently doing her PhD at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The topic of her research is sustainable and affordable housing. In her thesis, she investigates community participation and alternative models of housing, analysing Barcelona as a case study.

She studied architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and did an Erasmus exchange at the School of Architecture of Lyon. Her graduation thesis reflected on the production of the urban space of the Greek cities in the social and political framework of the financial crisis. Her diploma project focused on the urban commons, proposing a circular model of regeneration of an abandoned market in a deprived neighbourhood. She has a master’s degree from the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, where she looked at urban reuse and new materials, using prototyping and digital fabrication. She has worked as an architect in Copenhagen, on projects that vary from residential buildings to urban planning. She has also worked in Paris, in a collective focusing on community-led urban transformations and self-managed projects.

In her work she is interested in understanding the ways that people are interacting and shaping their environments, within the social, political, and cultural contexts that they form part of. She interprets the spatial configurations and the materiality of a place as a manifestation of socio-cultural identities, meanings, and human practices.

Elias is a landscape architect. He did his superior studies on architecture at ETSAV - UPC at his hometown, Barcelona. He received the Erasmus scholarship to study his fifth year at the School of Architecture of Athens - NTUA. Furthermore, he graduated with a thesis on Hannah Arendt and politics and philosophy of modern and postmodern architecture. Moreover, the final project of his master - The Metropolitan Garden at Sant Vicenç de Torelló - is a landscape architecture design in a rural environment. The proposal is a waste water regeneration system that transforms the agricultural space around a village.

Along his professional path, he has participated in different fields and projects. He worked with the NGO Base-A developing and directing the on site works of a library at Ndangame, Senegal. Also, together with a students team, he developed and constructed the prototype “TO” for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2019. Finally, he worked in a multidisciplinary team at the AMB (Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona) developing environmental regeneration projects at the river Llobregat.

Through his practice, he has built an understanding of landscape as the identity derived from the dynamics between territory and people. Dynamics that are in constant evolution through time, but can also be grasped. Therefore, every project begins by an exploration of these dynamics encompassing aesthetics, ecology and politics. The conclusive questions are formulated with an artistic exercise (see the samples). At this point, it can start - or not - the design, a process that begins with the movement of a hand and finishes as a social event.
