2025 RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Toichos

The island of Tinos is full of dry stones (UNESCO cultural heritage list), built over the centuries to create arable terraces and retain water. They are not actually used today but are now part of its natural landscape.

For some years now, the island has been at the center of the rapid development of numerous buildings, with imported cement-based materials, as a result of the pressure of the tourist real estate market. Therefore, one might wonder why the stones, which were part of a circular building ecosystem, are not re-placed in the structures?

The stone wall artifact reveals questions about our ability to imagine an ecological future in relation to our heritage. The complex knowledge contained in these ‘original infrastructures’ can teach us how we are entangled with the landscape, yesterday and tomorrow.

We would like to encourage artists, landscape designers, architects, writers etc, to dive deep and create collectively in this case to encourage a strong reflection on the conflicts between conservation and ecology happening in Tinos.

The inherited earth

“The inherited earth” residency program, curated by Christos Artemis, was a project of ephemeral resettlement in the quarry of Ag. Eleftheriou. The participants in a territorial part of it and using materials/techniques of then and now, created visual, environmental, social projects/productions.
