Eduardo Chillida was born in 1924 in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, where he died in 2002. Along the way, he created more than 40 works in public spaces around the world. He has had more than 500 solo exhibitions and his works are in public and private collections worldwide.
The Basque Country, corresponding to the Exo Meria of Tinos which is rich in marble, is full of mines of very good quality metal, which has been systematically mined since the 13th century. The men of the area all worked in the mines or in the large ironworks of the area. Chillida is born in such an area. His artistic journey starts from San Sebastian, passes through Europe, Greece, America and leads him back to his homeland, where he discovers that what expresses him is the art of metal, the cultural tradition of his region. The correspondence with Exo Meria of Tinos is strong and interesting, as here children learn to play by carving marble from a young age, while the multitude of artisans and marble sculpting workshops contributed to the spread of Tinian marble craft within and outside of Greece.
